Snowberries

Posted by Marilla (Turku, Finland) on 6 November 2009 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

I call these funny berries snowballs or snowberries. They are usually nice white balls but this time I present you the ugliest two. And actually they are quite cute!

All feedback is welcome!

Anina from Auckland, New Zealand

WOW!! This is beautiful! I love the tones. Great bokeh and dof. I have never seen these before. Is it an actaul berry?

@Anina: Thank you, Anina! I had to check this and yes, it is a bush with white berries. It's poisonous so you better look it, not eat it.

Ninni from Sweden

I really like this! Wonderful photo!

@Ninni: Thank you for your visit and comment, Ninni! Tack!

daniela scharnowski from Berlin, Germany

this is weird - do marshmellows grow on bushes?

6 Nov 2009 10:41am

@daniela scharnowski: Of course they grow on bushes - where else? But marshmallows are eatable, these are not. ;D

Wayne from Chalfont ,PA, United States

I'm with Anina - I've never heard of Snowberries. A double treat today - I learned something new AND I was fortunate enough to have been able to enjoy this beautiful photograph!

@Wayne: It's called snowberry or waxberry in English (had to check this too). I don't have those in my garden but it's quite common in this part of Finland. I'm glad I can give you new experiences! Here's some information about this snowberry (it's from Wikipedia and there's more text and pictures): "Symphoricarpos is a small genus of about 15 species of deciduous shrubs in the family Caprifoliaceae. All but one are natives of North America and Central America; the one remaining is from western China. Its common names in English are Snowberry and Waxberry. It is a member of the Honeysuckle Family, the Caprifoliaceae."

Thea from Leeuwarden, Netherlands

I really love the tones here..and the snowberries are looking cute indeed :)
Are they eatable?

6 Nov 2009 12:36pm

@Thea: No, sorry, they are poisonous. If you have picked some, don't eat them, dear Thea! Thanks for your comment. :)

Leena from Joensuu, Finland

Sinun kekseliäisyytesi kuvien luomisessa on lahjakasta! Upeaa!

marleen from Doesburg, Netherlands

I see popcorn:-))))
Lovely tones!

@marleen: Some of you think food all the time... Thanks, Marleen, have a nice evening with popcorns! :)

LESLIE from norwich, United Kingdom

Oh WOW Marilla, have never seen anything like this before. My first thought was it looked like cotten. Then like Marleen its could be popcorn

6 Nov 2009 6:08pm

@LESLIE: I assure, Les, that they are snowberries! :D

Kiwisa from North Shore, New Zealand

They are really quite the strangest looking berries:) I love the dof, it really highlights their unusual shape and form
